Le Pont de Pierre

"The Stone Bridge"

The Pont de Pierre is a stone vaulted arch bridge that stretches a massive 487 meters across the Garonne. The bridge was constructed by Napoleon Bonaparte between 1810 and 1822 and has 17 arches thought to represent each letter of Bonaparte’s name.

Not many people know that the brick foundations that sink into the water are actually hollow! It was the first bridge to be built across the Garonne and links the famous wine regions of the Left Bank to the city centre on the Right Bank.

LOCAL TIP : Today the bridge is used as the main link between the city centre and the suburbs to the north east. The tram A goes across the bridge from porte de Bourgogne although it is a great place for a bike ride.
