Which Bordeaux wine region should I visit on a wine tour?
While the plethora of tour options means that most key wine-growing appellations can be reached, there are two main areas that receive the vast majority of tourists: the Médoc and Saint-Émilion. There’s a key reason for this; nowhere else is it so easy to see the historical prosperity of Bordeaux’s winemakers and the region’s rich heritage.
The Médoc is home to ultra-famous châteaux, such as Château Margaux and la route des châteaux, which takes you past world-famous names that stun passersby with their jaw-dropping architecture. It’s home to four of the left bank’s famous Premier Grand Cru Classé chateaux, holders of the highest honor bestowed by the classification of left bank wines conceived in 1855.
Saint-Émilion is the right bank’s answer to the Médoc. This medieval village is a UNESCO World Heritage site that brings in visitors in droves for its well-preserved history and rich viticultural history. Tours here give visitors the chance to see not just spectacular vineyards and landscapes, but also a slice of history. The appellation has many satellites around it, including the hugely prestigious Pomerol appellation.
