Place de la Victoire
One of the main squares of the city of Bordeaux, Place de la Victoire is at the culmination of several of the city’s main streets.
The open square boasts the “Porte d’Aquitaine” (the “Aquitaine Gate”), a 17th century stone arch built to mark Bordeaux’s border with the communes to the south east.
The square also has a 16 metre high bronze and marble sculpture featuring two huge tortoises, designed by Ivan Theimer in 2005 to celebrate Bordeaux’s world famous viticulture.
Although the Victoire area is not really considered as part of the city centre- it is further south than the other central neighbourhoods of the city-, it is still an interesting area to visit with plenty of restaurants and bars to keep you entertained.
At “la Victoire”, there is an interesting mix of the austere and the bohemian; on the main square you will find mid-range restaurants doing very cheap Happy Hours. On the streets that branch off from the square, you can find smaller bars with an intimate feel, and reasonable prices!
If you’re on a budget, this part of town is the place to go.
LOCAL TIP : The square is at the end of the famous Rue Sainte-Catherine, one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe!
