La Place Saint Michel
The Saint Michel district is organised around Place Canteloup and Place des Capucins: it’s a very culturally diverse area with lots of different influences.
The Basilique Saint Michel is a magnificent example of gothic architecture completed in the XVI century and is one of the tallest in the whole of France at 114.6 meters. Like the Cathédrale Saint-André the bell tower was built completely independently from the main church in the XV century.
Nearly 70 mummies attracted thousands of visitors up until its closure in 1990. An audio visual tour now depicts the macabre exhibition which is still fresh in the minds of many locals.
The square is the location of several weekly markets including a large fruit and vegetable market on Saturdays (7:00 – 13:00) and a flea market on Mondays (7:00 – 13:00). If you’re looking for a break from the Bourgeois city centre, Saint Michel offers a great alternative for restaurants, coffee shops, shopping a bars.
The tower was constructed on an ancient burial site, and mummies uncovered during construction were exhibited for the public to see in the crypt of the church.
