The Museum of Aquitaine explores the rich history of Bordeaux and its surrounding regions, from prehistoric times to the present day.

Its collections display archeological discoveries and historical artefacts which combine to give us a powerful insight into the development of Aquitaine through the ages.

The museum doesn’t shirk away from delving into the darker parts of Bordeaux’s past, such as in the permanent exhibition (which was initially only temporary!) on the “triangular commerce” of the 18th and 19th centuries, which had a strong hand in making Bordeaux prosper. The exhibition opened at a time when Bordeaux was just beginning to come to terms with its role in slavery during the colonial period. It is a must-see exhibition.

Alongside its permanent exhibitions, there are also annual temporary exhibitions which explore themes about the history and cultures of the world, as well as a diverse range of lectures, screenings, debates, guided tours, concerts, meetings with foreign communities and educational workshops.

LOCAL TIP : The museum is a short walk from the Place Pey-Berland and the Cathédrale Saint André, get off the tram B at the helpfully named stop ‘Musée d’Aquitaine’, have a look around the museum and then stroll down to the cathedral.
