Marché des Capucins

Bordeaux's largest indoor market

An excellent place for food shopping if you’re in town long enough to want to stock up your fridge. It’s also a great place to come for lunch, as there are lots of stalls inside that sell everything from tapas and fresh pasta to local delicacies.

The Marché des Capucins has been Bordeaux’s largest city centre food market for centuries. The first recording of a market on this site was in 1749 following the attempted rejuvenation of the area by the Marquis de Tourny.

Originally selling mainly livestock, the market moved towards fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy products as transport links were improved and horses could pull carts of produce into the market area from the surrounding communities.

On the weekends, the Capucins market is a fantastically vibrant place, but don’t make the mistake of arriving too late! Like most traditional markets, once lunchtime is over, the market is over.

LOCAL TIP: Stroll up to the Marché des Capucins after spending the morning in the market at Saint Michel and have a lazy lunch amongst the locals.
