Musée National des Douanes
For most, the idea of a Customs Museum doesn’t get the blood flowing, but you should put your prejudices aside for this one!
Situated on the beautiful Place de la Bourse, the Musée National des Douanes- or ‘National Museum of Customs’ offers a historical journey from antiquity to the modern day.
As a port city, Bordeaux has always had a need to document what comes through. Thanks to this tradition, we now have a long historical trail that, through confiscated items and written documents, provides us with a clear picture of the greater happenings in history as well the real lives of ordinary people.
Uniforms, simple workman tools and downright bizarre objects give us a physical link with the past.
LOCAL TIP : A customs museum is particularly relevant in Bordeaux, due to the centuries of wine and other types of trade that have happened on the Quays, just in front of Porte Cailhau!
